§ 5-162. Standards for installations.

  • (a)

    All installations of electrical wiring and equipment shall be reasonably safe to persons and property and in conformity with the provisions of this article, the applicable statutes of the state and any rules or regulations issued by authority thereof.

    (b)

    In the installation of electrical wiring and apparatus, the requirements of the National Electrical Code adopted and on file in the city secretary's office shall constitute the minimum standards.

    (c)

    The following standards are prescribed in addition to those set forth in the National Electrical Code adopted and on file in the city secretary's office.

    (1)

    Additional work standards. All lead-in wires shall be not less than number four (4) and that all circuit wires shall be not less than number twelve (12). Copper wire shall be used in all electrical installations within the city.

    (2)

    Commercial buildings and structures. Commercial buildings and structures shall be defined to mean all buildings not classified as one- or two-family dwellings, or any building or structure of any type or character whatsoever when situated within the first fire limit or zone of the city. Tourist courts, rooming houses and apartment houses shall be classified as commercial when constructed within the first or second fire limits or zone of the city.

    (3)

    Residential buildings. Residential buildings shall be defined as only buildings of one- or two-family occupancy when situated outside of the first limit or zone. Tourist courts, rooming houses, and apartment houses shall be classified as residential when outside of the first and second fire limit or zone.

    (4)

    Commercial buildings or structures, wiring methods. All commercial buildings or structures shall be wired in conduit or EMT.
